Kutch Weave Craft

Woven by the Vankar community of Kutch, the yarn acts as a sort of canvas for their imagination — allowing them to paint on as they will. An almost 600-year-old tradition, the Vankars weave using the extra-weft weaving technique, the hand insertion of ornamental supplementary wefts, almost like embroidery. In this weaving technique, a weft yarn is used in the warp of the looms to create distinctive designs with geometric patterns, think Patli, Damroo, Popatiya, Chopero, and Chhad motifs and Miri designs -- all of which form the identity of Kutch weaving.
